Normal Work Schedule: Sunday - Thursday 10:00pm to 2:00am; 20 hours per week


Job Summary: The Access Services Library Night Assistant will assist with closing duties Sunday - Thursday 10:00pm to 2:00am for 20 hours a week. Secures the library buildings at closing. Confirms that all student assistants are on duty. Assists with patrons at all library service desks. Assumes the role of the point person for any emergency situations with UAPD or UA facilities personnel in the absence of the Night Operations Manager. Rotates nights between Bruno, Gorgas, and Rodgers Libraries to assist with closing. Assists patrons with finding library materials. Checks in/out materials. Processes returned materials. Answers phones. Troubleshoots copier/printers. Shelves. Sorts carts. Assists with ILL processes as time permits. Conducts walk throughs of the building. Reports any issues or problems. Ensures the building is secure at closing and that all patrons have vacated the building. Determines if all lights are turned off. Contacts appropriate personnel to address emergency issues as necessary. Ensures compliance with library policies and procedures. Other duties as assigned.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Current University of Alabama graduate student. Dependable and reliable to work hours as scheduled for the position, Sunday - Thursday nights from 10:00pm to 2:00am. Good customer service skills. Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with students, faculty, staff, and community members. Proficiency in the use of personal computers and MS Office software. Ability to lift books and push/pull book carts.

Applicant cannot be a Graduate Teaching Assistant or Graduate Research Assistant while working in this position.


Skills and Knowledge: Ability to operate and troubleshoot office equipment. Excellent time management skills. Ability to work well independently as well as collaboratively with other student workers and staff to complete work tasks. Strong attention to detail. Desire to learn new skills.


Preferred Qualifications: Customer service experience. Experience working in a library. Additional computer skills.


Enrollment Requirements: Applicants must meet enrollment requirements to be eligible for on-campus student employment. Applicants must be enrolled in a UA degree program and meet minimum credit hour requirements during the academic year: Undergraduate Students must be registered for at least 6 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; Graduate Students must be registered for at least 4.5 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; International Students must be registered full-time (Undergraduate = 12 credit hours, Graduate = 9 credit hours) during fall/spring semesters. Enrollment requirements must be maintained for the duration of on-campus employment. Individual hiring departments and programs may also have additional eligibility requirements for employment.
