Job Summary: The Peer Coach provides academic coaching to individuals and groups of students at the Capstone Center for Student Success - Academic Support Unit (CCSS/AS). Academic Coaching exists at the intersection of academic skills and habits, mental health, and life management. Topics in Academic Coaching often include time management, active study strategies, stress management, test anxiety, motivation, executive functioning, organization, and imposter syndrome. Peer Coaches are student leaders who are passionate about helping students learn to be successful academically at The University of Alabama. They serve as a connection to campus resources and role models for UA students. Peer Coaches assist students holistically for all areas of success (academic, social, personal) in college.


Additional Department Summary: Provides one-on-one/small-group academic peer coaching. Provides site tours and web tours to student groups who visit the Capstone Center for Student Success (CCSS). Leads student discussion/interaction around coaching topics. Assists full-time pro academic coaches as assigned. Schedules peer coaching sessions with coachees, providing guidance and perspective in the context of the one-on-one meetings. Corresponds by email to check in and/or remind coachees of upcoming meetings. Maintains a log and notes on all meetings with coachees. Works closely with pro academic coaches to assist and coordinate on student needs. Conducts services such as workshops, skill-building sessions, class tours, and “advice from a peer coach.” Greets coachees and other visitors in a professional and courteous manner. Presents a positive image of the CCSS through conduct and professional dress. Acts as an on-site resource for coachees and others, to include referrals to tutoring, learning resources, study spaces and classrooms, as well as other campus resources (libraries, advisors, counseling center, etc.). Keeps supervisor(s) fully informed of any events or conditions that might affect students, staff, or visitors. Assists with maintaining accurate records, including tracking the number of students utilizing services at CCSS. Provides feedback and suggestions on projects and assists with projects that might contribute to improving operations and procedures. Participates in required training, meetings, and activities. Completes mandatory compliance training as required by UA. Completes assigned tasks in an accurate, prompt, and thorough manner.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Current University of Alabama undergraduate student. Minimum of two (2) complete semesters on-campus at UA. Good conduct and academic standing with UA (minimum 3.0 GPA, can include transfer credit).


Skills and Knowledge: Exceptional organizational and time management skills. Experience and familiarity with campus resources at UA. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and develop productive relationships. Ability to communicate with various constituencies (staff, faculty, and students). Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong work ethic. Leadership and team building experience. Working knowledge of basic office equipment, personal computers, and Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Microsoft Planner). Familiarity with data entry and general office procedures.


Preferred Qualifications: Experience coaching or mentoring peers. Experience in other roles (student assistant, student advisor, tutor) at the Capstone Center for Student Success. Highly motivated and innovative self-starter who collaborates well with others.


Enrollment Requirements: Applicants must meet enrollment requirements to be eligible for on-campus student employment. Applicants must be enrolled in a UA degree program and meet minimum credit hour requirements during the academic year: Undergraduate Students must be registered for at least 6 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; Graduate Students must be registered for at least 4.5 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; International Students must be registered full-time (Undergraduate = 12 credit hours, Graduate = 9 credit hours) during fall/spring semesters. Enrollment requirements must be maintained for the duration of on-campus employment. Individual hiring departments and programs may also have additional eligibility requirements for employment.
